Helping Nepal on World Earth Day 2022

For this World Earth Day 2022 will you join us in planting saplings in Nepal?

A sapling at Pipal Tree's magical Dhanushadham Bird Park project site costs just 80 pence and, through our Big Give appeal your gift can automatically double in value. You can plant two trees for the price of one! Or fund your own forest patch for just £10.

Here's why we need your help. Three weeks ago, Swiss-based IQ Air identified Kathmandu as being the city with the worst air quality in the world. Pipal Tree is pushing back against air pollution by pioneering in Nepal the rapid-growth Miyawaki Method reforestation technique. It's designed specifically for the urban environment where space for tree planting is at a premium. The Method has already been used to great effect around the world including in Europe, with these tiny forests growing ten times faster than a conventional forest. In doing so, they capture carbon, clean the air of pollutants and cool built-up areas.

We launched this project in December last year, when a south Nepal village community, schoolchildren and college students came together to plant an initial 12,500 saplings. This plantation incorporates an important demonstration site to show how the method can be adopted elsewhere in Nepal. We would like to extend this work by planting a further 24,800 saplings in a final extension of the Bird Park. This will create a showpiece forest that will become a special place for art and nature lovers alike. Just watch the video below to see why this Park will be unique in south Asia!

The impact of our initiative has already been huge nationally, with centre-page coverage in the highly acclaimed Nepali Times. This has led to requests from other organisations for our support in planting similar forests within Kathmandu valley itself. These have included the Delegation of the European Union to Nepal, who want to offset their unavoidable head office carbon emissions by funding the creation of a Miyawaki forest in the capital.
