Summary

As part of our Decade of Action for Nepal and the planet, we are planting a Gurkha Memorial Forest in south Nepal that will commemorate Gurkha veterans since the start of the Second World War. Rather than erecting statues, we will create a living memorial that will have the additional benefit of helping the environment in these desperate times. The forest will eventually incorporate 13 dense clusters representing the 13 Victoria Crosses won in the Second World War.

Outcome

Upon completion, the project will incorporate the following elements:

  • Forests with associated trails that allow visitors to access display panels relating to environmental history and wildlife
  • A visitor centre that will: 1. Tell the Gurkha storyGive environmental and conservation information, including about the wildlife corridor. 2. Describe the project, project partners and how it fitted into our broader fight against climate change. 3. Offer merchandise, including goods made by Lily's Leaves, the Kathmandu-based social enterprise that we support.
  • Art work - specifically a mosaic mural dedicated to the Gurkhas. This will be designed by Philip Holmes and constructed by deaf young people whom Philip has trained in mosaic techniques. The mural will be up to 25m in length. Quite an artistic statement!

We launched this project in 2022  as part of a larger programme that aims to reduce the impact of climate change. Nepal is the tenth most climate change impacted country in the world and its most vulnerable people face disaster. It is incumbent upon us to help them just as their Gurkha forefathers helped us in our hour of need.

How can you help ?

Just £1 will allow you to plant one sapling at our Gurkha Memorial Forest in Nepal to commemorate the heroism and loyalty of the Gurkha soldiers who fought for our freedom in the Second World War. Once completed, the forest will consist of a 12-kilometre-long wildlife corridor that will offer safe passage to Nepal's endangered wildlife, including its dwindling population of wild elephants. Could you help us plant five trees? Or ten trees? Or even more? Please donate now and help us to honour the courage, loyalty, and sacrifice of these brave men. While doing our bit to save the planet.
