Summary

Partnering with Mithila Wildlife Trust, we discovered 15 children in a leper colony in Dhanusha District during the 2021 Nepal COVID lockdown lacked educational support. We applied for funding from UK Foundation "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" and hired two tutors, Ritik Rishi and Ramesh Sada, from the impoverished Musahar community to teach the children and continue their own undergraduate studies. This helps empower their community by creating leaders and role models.

aims & objectives

Much more work needs to be done at this center and at other locations within Province 2. Our partner registered charity, Our Sansar, has designed a major community education program to address this need. Subject to grant funding being awarded, we are hopeful that this broader program will launch soon.

This project started in 2021 and is included in our larger program aiming at supporting vulnerable people through education as well as giving key support to the local community.

outcome

The children are now being provided with tuition support and stationery, and the Mithila Wildlife Trust has been working on getting citizenship certificates for them. So far, 11 children have been able to enroll at the local school while our colleagues continue to work on obtaining certificates for the remaining four children. This means that we have an arrangement mirroring that at Dhanushadham where children attend school alongside receiving tuition support with extra lessons and homework at separate tuition centers. Ritik and Ramesh asked us if the extra tuition could be extended to 44 Musahar children in the community outside the colony. I was surprised at this as leprosy is highly stigmatized and feared in Nepal. However, the Nepal Leprosy Trust has been working on these attitudes locally and the families of these Musahar children are now happy for them to go inside the colony to attend the tuition center in total safety.
