Summary

The Bhatighadi community forest area in Nepal was initially advised by forestry experts not to be reforested due to the sandy and gravelly soil. However, with funding from the Gemma and Chris McGough Charitable Foundation, the project was undertaken and has had a 93% survival rate for the saplings planted. The success of the project is attributed to the use of cement posts and chain-link fencing to protect the land, preparing deep pits for compost and imported soil, using a tractor and water tanker for watering, controlling weeds, and fostering strong local partnerships.

extra goal

The project will include research on the most successful approach to sapling survival which has been recognized by the Zoological Society of London as a pangolin conservation area.

This project started in 2021 and is included in our larger program aiming at minimizing the impact of the climate crisis on the vulnerable population in Nepal.

Next phase

The future plans of this project have a two-fold impact: expanding conservation areas and providing alternative livelihoods. These plans will protect and preserve the environment, improve health and biodiversity, and reduce poverty, crime, and pressure on resources. Both people and the environment will benefit.
