Summary

The Mithila Wildlife Trust focuses on education and social upliftment for poor communities. They have established a successful "Community Learning Centre" model that helps children stay in mainstream education and teaches respect for nature and sustainable living. The centers act as non-formal education entry points and the first one was set up in Dhanushadham with great success.

Situation on the ground

Pasman Tol, a village known as "Thief Village" by locals due to high rates of burglaries, is actually a victim of natural disasters caused by climate change and poor river management. There are currently 412 households and approximately 500 children who do not attend school. Also, in another village called Kamala Tol - a village of 76 families from the Musahar community who were relocated 12 years ago due to a river change of course. Of the 175 children in the community, only 15 attend school.

This project started in 2020 and is included in our larger program aiming at supporting vulnerable people through education as well as giving key support to the local community.

our response

The Mithila Wildlife Trust will now expand its innovative and successful educational model “Community Learning Center” to the children of Pasman To, and Kamala Toll. This model aims to keep children in mainstream education and will develop respect for nature and insight into sustainable living.

project aims

The Mithila Wildlife Trust plans to create a Community Learning Center (CLC) in Pasman Tol, by refurbishing an old building and constructing a new one to provide education and hope for the community. They have secured funds for building work, but need to find operating costs for the first few years. And they will also set up another CLC in Kamala Tol. The plan is to demolish an old building and construct a new one to provide non-formal education and support to the community. Funds are still needed for the project which could be completed within six months.
